2026 Hailed as the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their visibility has seemingly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this phenomenon, I performed a detailed review into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the trend in gaming seems uniquely powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities enable a host of innovative control schemes.

Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

When these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
