Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
