Labuschagne Dropped from Australian One-Day International Squad Against India

Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a surprise selection.

Performance Issues Result in Exclusion

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international side after managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of 47 in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.

The batsman has played 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a Test recall in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates

There have been indications of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

He has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia look for a fix to their top-order woes.

Pace Returns and Fitness Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule

Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
