Significant Internet Outage Hits Many Sites and Apps

A large-scale online disruption has impacted dozens websites and mobile apps worldwide, and users reporting issues getting online after problems at the web hosting platform.

The impacted services comprise the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-operated platforms such as its key e-commerce site and the Ring security home security firm.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was affected along with its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were also reports of problems reaching the HMRC website on Monday morning. Also in the UK, many Ring customers used online platforms to report their doorbells were failing.

Solely in the United Kingdom, reports of issues on individual applications reached the tens of thousands for each platform.

Officials confirmed that the issue began in the eastern region of the US at the cloud division, a section that supplies essential web infrastructure for numerous companies, who utilize resources on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the most extensive web hosting service.

Soon after late night (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “elevated problem frequencies and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the eastern US of the United States. The ripple effect was seen to disrupt services worldwide, with the Downdetector site reporting outages with the identical platforms in different parts of the world.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on web disruptions, also reported a rise in issues on that morning, and numerous instances situated in Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the problems started.
