Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
